Nitrogen deposition accelerates soil carbon sequestration in tropical forests
Forest soil carbon (C) storage plays a central role in sequestrating atmospheric CO2 on timescales from centuries to millennia. However, our current understanding of soil C sequestration in response to N deposition mainly focuses on mid-to-high latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere, where N supply typically constrains forest growth. We lack data about changes in soil C stocks in tropical forests, where most ecosystems are N-rich or N-saturated. Using more than a decade of continuous N addition experiment and a meta-analysis, we found that excess N deposition can significantly increase soil C in N-rich tropical forests. However, enhanced C sequestration in tropical soils is not a good reason to justify excess N emissions to the atmosphere. Data have been deposited with the South China Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences () All other study data are included in the article and/or [ SI Appendix ][1]. For tomato genes, one plus one doesn’t always make two - Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory
Both people and tomatoes come in different shapes and sizes. That is because every individual has a unique set of genetic variations—mutations—that affect how genes act and function. Added together, millions of small genetic variations make it hard to predict how a particular mutation will impact any individual. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) Professor and...

Current climate model simulations overestimate future sea level rise - Florida News Times
Credit: CC0 public domain The melting rate of the Antarctic ice sheet is mainly controlled by the rise in seawater temperature around Antarctica. Using the new high-resolution climate model simulation, scientists at Utrecht University have discovered a much slower rise in seawater temperature compared to current simulations with coarser resolution. As a result, the projected …
