Cattle and beef/milk consumption often take the blame for climate change. Yes, dairy and beef cattle produce methane and methane is 28 times more potent than CO2. BUT the rest of the story is that methane only stays in the atmosphere for ten years and CO2 is there for 1,000 years (and nothing destroys it.) Methane is destroyed through oxidation. It's essentially destroyed at the rate it is produced, making it a "flow" gas rather than a "stock" gas like CO2. So much of the story is left out...cattle play an important role in the biogenic carbon cycle. Cattle are part of the SOLUTION.

Many local evens happening and Illinois Farm Doc has great on line decision aids at . Open sign up for the Conservation Reserved Program continues too. While we plan to re-enroll some prairie plantings and wildlife planting, our 30 acres of pine and hardwood trees no longer qualify which is very disappointing. Guess we will be in the lumber business now! 2) Our county watershed group hosts the 2020 Soil Health Expo offering how to resources for area farmers on no till, cover cropping and manure management. This also program features Ag Economist Barry Flinchbaugh, Radio Host Chip Flory, and Technology writer Willie Vogt along with a variety of informational sessions and industry trade show.
