According to researchers at Virginia Tech, the U.S. dairy industry contributes approximately 1.58 percent of the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions. A commonly suggested solution to reduce greenhouse gas output has been to reduce or eliminate this industry in favor of plant production. Yet according to the research, the removal of dairy cows from the United States agricultural industry would only reduce greenhouse emissions by about 0.7 percent while significantly lowering the available supply of essential nutrients for humans: protein requirements of 169 million people, calcium requirements of 254 million people, and energy requirements of 71.2 million people. Maybe it's because I work in the dairy industry, but I rarely hear what other industries are doing to lower their GHGs. What have you seen?
