Indian farmers rack up carbon credits with climate-conscious ways

A new method of cultivation, called direct seeded rice (DSR), reduces the overall cost of cultivation by using 12-35% less irrigation water and reducing labor, sowing time, and use of chemical herbicides and fertilisers. The cultivation of rice, a staple food for more than 3 billion people worldwide, is responsible for 12% of global methane emissions and 1.5% of total greenhouse gas emissions.

Govt may hike agri credit target to about Rs 19 lakh cr in Budget

"Non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) and co-operatives are active in the agriculture credit space. The Nabard refinance scheme will be further expanded. Agriculture credit target for the year 2020-21 has been set up at Rs 15 lakh crore," Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said while announcing the Budget 2020-21.

Farmers welcome govt's proposal to keep agricultural laws on hold

Farmer leader Shivkumar Kakka, who has been a part of all the 10 meetings held with the government at Vigyan Bhawan here so far, said: "We do not trust the committee, but the government has offered to put the laws on hold... It is definitely a matter to consider. We will discuss this and eventually try to form an opinion."
